Os Objetivos da Sociedade Espírita 

Algumas pessoas parecem enganadas quanto ao verdadeiro objetivo e o caráter da Sociedade. Permiti-me recordá-los em poucas palavras.

(...) Esse objetivo é, essencialmente e, pode dizer-se, com exclusividade, o estudo da ciência espírita. O que queremos, antes de tudo, não é nos convencer, pois já o estamos, mas instruir-nos e aprender o que não sabemos.

Para tanto, queremos colocar-nos nas mais favoráveis condições. Como esses estudos exigem calma e recolhimento, queremos evitar tudo quanto seja causa de perturbação. Tal é a consideração que deve prevalecer na apreciação das medidas que vamos adotar.(...)

Não impomos nossas idéias a ninguém. Os que as adotam é porque as consideram justas. Os que vêm a nós é porque pensam aqui encontrar oportunidade de aprender (...).

Reunimo-nos para estudar o Espiritismo, como outros se reúnem para estudar a frenologia, a história ou outras ciências. E como nossas reuniões não se baseiam em nenhum interesse material, pouco nos importa se outras se formam ao nosso lado.

Na verdade, seria atribuir-nos idéias bem mesquinhas, bem estreitas e bem pueris crer que as veríamos com olhos ciumentos; os que pensassem em nos criar rivalidades mostrariam, por isso mesmo, quão pouco compreendem o verdadeiro espírito da doutrina. Só lamentamos uma coisa: que nos conheçam tão mal, a ponto de nos suporem acessível ao ignóbil sentimento do ciúme.

Compreende-se que empresas mercenárias rivais, que podem prejudicar-se pela concorrência, se vejam com maus olhos. Mas se essas reuniões não tiverem em vista, como deveriam ter, senão um interesse puramente moral, e a elas não se misturarem nenhuma consideração mercantil, pergunto: Em que poderiam ser prejudicadas pela multiplicidade? Dirão, sem dúvida, que se não existe interesse material, há o do amor-próprio, o desejo de destruir o crédito moral de seu vizinho.

Mas talvez esse móvel fosse ignóbil ainda. Se é assim - que Deus não permita - apenas lamentaremos os que forem movidos por semelhantes pensamentos. Queremos sobrepujar os vizinhos? Tratemos de fazer melhor que eles: eis aí uma luta nobre e digna, desde que não seja ofuscada pela inveja e pelo ciúme.

Eis, pois, senhores, um ponto essencial, que não deve ser perdido de vista: não formamos uma seita, nem uma sociedade de propaganda, nem uma corporação com interesse comum; se deixássemos de existir, o Espiritismo não sofreria nenhum prejuízo, formando-se, de nossas ruínas, vinte outras sociedades.(...)

(...) As raízes do Espiritismo não estão em nossa Sociedade, mas no mundo inteiro. Existe algo mais poderoso que eles, que todas as sociedades: é a doutrina, que vai ao coração e à razão dos que a compreendem, e, sobretudo, dos que a praticam.

Esses princípios, senhores, indicam-nos o verdadeiro caráter do nosso regimento, que nada tem em comum com os estatutos de uma corporação. Nenhum contrato nos liga uns aos outros; fora de nossas sessões não temos outras obrigações recíprocas que não sejam as de nos comportarmos como gente bem-educada. Os que nessas reuniões não encontrarem aquilo que nelas esperam achar, têm toda liberdade de retirar-se; eu mesmo não compreenderia que permanecessem, desde que não lhes convenha o que aqui se faz. Não seria racional que viessem perder tempo.

Em toda reunião é preciso uma regra para a manutenção da boa ordem. Falando claramente, nosso regulamento nada mais é que uma instrução destinada a estabelecer ordem em nossas sessões,
a manter, entre os assistentes, as relações de urbanidade e de conveniência que devem presidir a todas as assembléias de pessoas educadas, abstração feita das condições inerentes à especialidade de nossos trabalhos.

Porque não tratamos apenas com homens, mas com Espíritos que, como sabeis, não são igualmente bons, e contra a velhacaria dos quais é preciso que nos resguardemos. Nesse número, alguns são muito astuciosos e podem mesmo, poródio ao bem, impelir-nos a uma via perigosa. Cabe a nós ter bastante prudência e perspicácia para frustrá-los, o que nos obriga a tomar precauções particulares.

Lembrai-vos, Senhores, da maneira pela qual se formou a Sociedade. Eu recebia em minha casa algumas pessoas em pequeno comitê. Com o crescimento do grupo, acharam que era preciso um local maior. Para consegui-lo, teríamos de pagar; tivemos, portanto, que nos cotizar. Disseram mais: é preciso ordem nas sessões; não se pode admitir o primeiro que chegar; é necessário, portanto, um regulamento.

Eis toda a história da Sociedade. Como vedes, é bem simples. Não entrou na cabeça de ninguém fundar uma instituição, nem se ocupar do que quer que seja fora dos estudos; eu próprio declaro, de maneira muito formal, que se um dia a Sociedade quiser ir além, não a acompanharei.

O que fiz, outros são mestres em fazê-lo(...). E esses diferentes grupos podem entender-se perfeitamente e viver como bons vizinhos. (...) Devem ser fração de um grande todo, mas não seitas rivais. E o mesmo grupo, tornado muito numeroso, pode subdividir-se como os enxames de abelhas.(...)

Entretanto, é preciso convir que entre certos grupos há uma espécie de rivalidade ou, antes, de antagonismo. Qual a causa? Meu Deus! esta causa está na fraqueza humana, no espírito de orgulho que quer impor-se; está, sobretudo, no conhecimento ainda incompleto dos verdadeiros princípios do Espiritismo.

Cada um defende os seus Espíritos, como outrora as cidades da Grécia defendiam seus deuses que, seja dito de passagem, não passavam de Espíritos mais ou menos bons. Essas dissidências só existem porque há pessoas que querem julgar, antes de terem tudo visto, ou que julgam do ponto de vista de sua personalidade. Elas se apagarão, como muitas outras já se apagaram, à medida que a ciência se reformular (...).

Em resumo, o que devemos buscar é remover todas as causas de perturbação e de interrupção; manter entre nós as boas relações, de que os espíritas sinceros, mais que outros, devem dar exemplo;
opor-nos, por todos os meios possíveis, ao afastamento da Sociedade de seus objetivos, à abordagem de questões que não são de sua alçada, e que degenere em arena de controvérsias e de personalismo. (...)

The Objectives of the Spiritist Society

Some people seem deceived as to the real purpose and character of the Society. Let me remind you briefly.

(...) This goal is, essentially, and it can be said, exclusively, the study of science spirit. What we want, above all, is to convince us, because we are already, but instruct us and learn what we do not know.

To that end, we put ourselves in the most favorable conditions. Because these studies require calm and gathering, we want to avoid all that is because of disturbance. This is a consideration that should prevail in the assessment of the measures we adopt. (...)

We do not impose our ideas to anyone. Those who adopt them is because they consider them to be fair. Those who come to us is because they think here find opportunity to learn (...).

We meet to study Spiritualism, as others gather to study phrenology, history or other sciences. And because our meetings are not based on any material interest in the matter if some other form beside us.

Actually, it would assign us well petty ideas and narrow and well puerile to believe that we would see with jealous eyes, and those who think of us create rivalries show, therefore, how little you understand the true spirit of the doctrine. Our only regret one thing: we know so badly, to the point of supposing accessible ignoble feelings of jealousy.

It is understood that rival mercenary firms that may harm themselves by competition, find themselves with bad eyes. But if these meetings do not have a view, as they should have, but a purely moral, and they do not mingle any merchant account, ask: In what could be hampered by the multitude? It will, without doubt, that there is no material interest, there is the self-love, the desire to destroy the moral credit of his neighbor.

But maybe that was ignoble mobile yet. If so - God forbid - the only regret that they are moved by similar thoughts. We want to overwhelm the neighbors? Let us do better than them: behold a fight noble and worthy, since it is not overshadowed by envy and jealousy.

Here, then, gentlemen, an essential point that must not be lost sight of: we do not form a sect or a society of propaganda, or a corporation with common interest if we stopped there, Spiritualism not suffer any damage, forming if, in our ruins, twenty other companies. (...)

(...) The roots of Spiritualism are not in our society, but worldwide. There is something more powerful than they, that all societies: is the doctrine that goes to the heart and because of that they understand, and especially those who practice it.

These principles, gentlemen, show us the true character of our regiment, which has nothing in common with the bylaws of a corporation. No contract binds us to each other, outside of our sessions we have no reciprocal obligations other than those to behave like well-mannered people. Those who do not find these meetings what we expect to find them, have complete freedom to withdraw, I understand that not even remain, provided that suits them what is done here. It would not be rational to come spend time.

In every meeting we need a rule for the maintenance of good order. Clearly, our regulation is nothing more than a statement designed to establish order in our sessions,

maintain, among wizards, relations of urbanity and convenience that should preside over all meetings of educated people, abstraction made of the conditions attached to the specialty of our work.

Why not just deal with men, but with spirits who, as you know, there are equally good, and against the knavery of which is that we need resguardemos. In this issue, some are very crafty and can even poródio well to propel us to a dangerous path. It behooves us to have enough prudence and foresight to frustrate them, which forces us to take special precautions.

Remember, gentlemen, the way in which the Society was formed. I got some people in my house in small committee. With the growth of the group, found that a larger venue was needed. To achieve it, we would have to pay, had, therefore, that in paying contributions. They said, you must order at meetings, you can not admit that the first to arrive, it is necessary, therefore, a regulation.

However, one must admit that among certain groups there is a kind of rivalry or rather antagonistic. What causes it? My God! this cause is in human weakness, in the spirit of pride that wants to impose itself;'re mainly still incomplete knowledge of the true principles of Spiritualism.

Everyone defends their spirits, as formerly the cities of Greece defended their gods that be said in passing, were merely spirits more or less good. These disagreements exist only because there are people who want to judge before they have seen it all, or who think in terms of his personality. They are turned off, as many others already faded, as if science reshape (...).

In short, what we seek is to remove all causes of disturbance and interruption; maintain good relations between us, that the sincere spirit, more than others, should set an example;

oppose, by all means, the expulsion of the Society of its objectives, to address issues that are not within his authority, and that degenerate into the arena of controversy and personalism. (...)
